Assam: Huge Consignment of Illegal Liquor Seized

MARIANI: In a recent operation, Mariani Police was able to capture a huge consignment of alcohol. The operation was carried out in the New Sonowal Seuji village of Mariani on Saturday.

The team was able to confiscate illegal liquor worth over Rupees 3 lakhs. A Mahindra Bolero Pickup bearing registration plates NL 02 Q 2633 was also confiscated nu the police team during this drive. The team was also able to capture 900 cans of beer and 2040 bottles of rum from the vehicle.

According to the police, this vehicle was taking the consignment to neighbouring Nagaland when they were able to apprehend the vehicle in Mariani. It is important to note that the vehicle is owned by one Shyam Kumar Saha belonging to the Ananda Nagar locality of Bhugdoimukh in the Jorhat district of the state.

Meanwhile, local people visited the police station to see the seized alcohol consignment.

Assam police had also seized around 1 kg of narcotic substances in the Barpeta district a few days back. “Based on a secret tip-off, a special police team conducted an operation on Sunday night in Howly area of the district and seized brown sugar weighing 939.88 gm, a police official said. The accused have been identified as Afaz Ali, a resident of Howly and Ramesh Ch Biswas who hails from Garemari Pathar area. Police said that the drugs were kept hidden in 23 soap boxes and Rs 2,86,700 cash was also recovered from the accused. “The market value of the seized drugs is around 1 crore,” the officer added.

Before that, acting on a tip-off, Assam police seized a large consignment of illicit drugs at the Inter-State Bus Terminus (ISBT) located in Betkuchi and arrested three smugglers. They are identified as Kij Gamlin, Thomas Gayedi, and Ram Subba. The police could seize 10 packets of heroin weighing 150 grams from their possession. The police said the seized item will be worth Rs 12 lakh in the international market.
