Assam: Huge Consignment of Yaba Tablets Worth Rs 40 Lakh Seized, 3 Arrested In Hailakandi

SILCHAR: Marking another success in the war against drugs peddling and smuggling, Police teams from Lala Bazar and Abdullahpur Police stations in Assam’s Hailakandi conducted a successful joint operation that resulted in the large number of 8,000 Yaba tablets getting seized on Sunday.

Sources informed that the police managed to arrest three smugglers in relation to the incident. They were identified as Akbar Hussain Laskar, Kabir Uddin Laskar and Anwar Hussain Laskar.

It is significant to mention that Anwar Hussain Laskar is a panchayat representative.

The seized methamphetamine or Yaba tablets have an estimated street value of around Rs 40 lakh, an indication of the huge magnitude of the illicit drug trade being conducted in the region.

The police responded swiftly to an intelligence input and swung into action, apprehending the culprits involved and launching an investigation into their involvement in drug trafficking across the international border and through different states in the NE region.

The police had earlier made another successful seizure on May 18, when a huge consignment of around 4,000 Yaba tablets calculated to be worth several lakhs of rupees was seized in Hailakandi district of Assam.

According to officials, Hailakandi Police after getting wind of a possible smuggling operation based on specific intelligence, set up a mobile checkpoint along the highway bypass at Narayanpur and intercepted a vehicle.

When a thorough inspection was made, the police officials discovered narcotic Yaba tablets concealed in the car. A total quantity of around 4,000 tablets was confiscated.

In addition, two people connected with the narcotics recovery were detained by the police. Officials later said that they have identified them as Farijuddin Laskar and Rahmat Ali Majumdar.

Moreover, the police said that the seized Yaba tablets were worth around Rs 40 lakhs in the international market.

In the operation, the vehicle that was used for the smuggling operation was also seized by the police, officials further stated.

In recent times, the police have been conducting operations against smuggling of drugs and other illicit goods from across the international border. In another major bust, a total of 233 sacks of Burmese areca nuts worth several lakhs were seized in an operation in Assam’s Hailakandi.
