GUWAHATI: In another blow to the illicit drug trade, Border Security Force (BSF) troops in a joint operation with Assam Police on Tuesday recovered a huge haul of heroin in Karimganj district of South Assam.
BSF troops and Assam police in Karimganj seized the huge haul of heroin stashed in a truck bound for Tripura.
The joint team of BSF and Assam Police is said to have stopped and searched the truck near New Karimganj Railway Station and recovered 9.477 kg of heroin worth Rs 47.4 crores, a BSF spokesman said. The truck was headed to Tripura from Mizoram through Karimganj when it was intercepted.
The personnel of BSF and Karimganj police acted on specific information, stopped the truck and seized the heroin packed in 764 soap cases stashed in a secret chamber built inside the driver's cabin, the spokesman added.
The driver of the truck was arrested and a case registered against him. The police are also interrogating him for further information.
Earlier, on October 6, two drug peddlers were nabbed in Shillong and over 150 grams of heroin were recovered from them. The accused were arrested by Meghalaya Police. "Our war against drug trafficking is on! On September 29 also, Assam Police seized more than 170 grams of heroin and arrested a drug peddler in Nagaon district. The accused was identified as Rashan Ali. Based on specific information, a team of Nagaon district police conducted a raid at Rashan Ali's house in Nottam Panigaon area of Nagaon. The police team recovered three soap cases containing 40 grams of heroin and 96 plastic vials weighing 137.77 grams of heroin from Rashan Ali. The accused has been arrested and a case has been registered against him.
