GUWAHATI: The Karbi Student Association (KSA) in Umrangso has organized a demonstration march against an Assam Minerals Development Corporation (AMDC) Limited public hearing scheduled for December 8.
"The hearing will be for the extraction of limestone for three numbers block in the mining lease area of 430 HA, 200 HA, and 33 HA situated in the New Umrangso region of the Dima Hasao district," a department source said.
Dozens of people apparently attended the protest march, which began at 29kM and concluded at 28kM of Umrangso, and sent a memorandum to AMDC's Managing Director through AMDC's authorities.
In the meantime, Dhansing Teron, Head of state of the Karbi Student Association (KSA), notified the mainstream press that "the villages of the greater Umrangso area have been having troubles since 1971 when the NEPCO construction began; at that time, 18 numbers of villages were moved without even any amenities," and that "ones again in 1989, eleven numbers of villages were relocated without any facilities during the setup of various Cement projects."
The AMDC, thus according to KSA, must end the open meeting by December 8, 2021. The student body further stated that if the AMDC officials do not provide any material or notification concerning the cancellation of the public meeting by December 4th, 2021, the KSA would call for a prolonged bandh in Umrangso and surrounding regions beginning December 5th.
