Assam: Imam murdered on Masjid premises in Tinsukia district

TINSUKIA: In a gruesome murder, an imam of a masjid was killed within the masjid premises by an unidentified assailant in the early morning on Sunday at Kolabari, Makum, in the Tinsukia district.

Identified as Tejibur Islam, hailing from Kishanganj, Bihar, he was performing namaz after azan when the assailant attacked him from behind. According to an eyewitness, the assailant was overpowered by a person inside the mosque, who pulled him to a distance before calling a few people gathered there for namaz. The assailant went inside the masjid again, dragged the imam outside to the portico, and hacked him in the neck using a machete. The assailant immediately fled the scene. The assailant was unmasked, and no vehicle was noticed nearby, said the eyewitness, who also briefed the media. The police launched a massive hunt to track the assailant and picked up the eyewitness, who is believed to be a prime suspect, and cooked up the story, according to the police.
