HOJAI: A total of seven business establishments were completely gutted in a huge fire in Hojai district of Assam on Sunday night

According to reports, the conflagration is said to have erupted in front of Vishal Market in Purana Bazaar of Hojai late at night. Police sources revealed that the fire is suspected to have started from a shop named Arfan Electronics as a result of a short circuit caused by faulty wiring.

Property worth crores of rupees is estimated to have been destroyed in the devastating inferno. After being informed about the incident, five fire tenders from Hojai, Dabaka and Lanka fire services were pressed into service upon reaching the spot. Fire fighting personnel, with active help of the police, managed to control the massive fire from spreading further.

However, there were no reports of any injuries or casualties as a result of the incident.

Earlier, on April 24, at least 10 business establishments were burnt to ashes in a massive fire that broke out in a market area at Bokajan under Assam’s Karbi Anglong district. The fire was reported from a commercial area in Khukanjan area of the town.

At least 10 shops in the area were reported to have been completely gutted in the fire, with goods worth lakhs being destroyed.

The cause of the fire, however, could not be ascertained.

Sources said fire tenders reached the scene and attempted to douse the blaze.

A night earlier, a fire broke out in Sonakhuli village of Dhubri district causing extensive damage to a cloth shop in the area.

The fire broke out around 1 am, and it quickly spread, completely gutting the shop and residence, with goods worth Rs 3-4 lakh destroyed.

After Halakura police were informed of the incident, they rushed to the spot and alerted the fire brigade. The fire brigade arrived promptly and, with the help of the locals and police, was able to douse the fire. The fire was brought under control within a few hours, but not before causing significant damage to the cloth shop and its contents.

An electrical short circuit is believed to have caused the fire, according to initial reports.
