Assam: International Overdose Awareness Day Event Organised

GUWAHATI: The International Overdose Awareness Day is organised on 31 August to spread awareness about problems arising from the consumption of narcotics. An event was organised along the same lines on Thursday in Guwahati and Assam minister Pijush Hazarika participated in the same along with several other dignitaries.

Assam Minister for Parliamentary Affairs, Water Resources, Information & Public Relations, Printing & Stationery, Social Justice and Empowerment, Pijush Hazarika took part in the International Overdose Awareness Day programme organised by the State Anti-Drug and Prohibition Council in collaboration with the Association of Drug Rehabilitation Centres of Assam as the chief guest. The event was organised on the premises of the NERIM Group of Institutions in Guwahati.

Speaking on the occasion, the minister addressed the problems associated with the usage of narcotic substances and called on the public to support the police and the government to combat the threat posed by the increasing use of such substances in the region. He also appealed to the youth and their parents and guardians to be aware of the ill effects of drug abuse and to be vigilant against anyone involved in such activities in the vicinity.

Several other dignitaries including the Chairman of the State Anti-Drug and Prohibition Council Mridula Borthakur, Vice Chairman Jitu Borgohain, Director of the Social Justice and Empowerment Department Kishore Thakuria, Chairman of the NERIM Group of Institutions Dr Zoii Nath Sarmah and Director of the NERIM Group of Institutions Prof Sangeeta Tripathi attended this event.

Narcotics have been a major cause of concern in the state of Assam as well as the entire northeast Indi. Although several governments and police forces are working hard towards reaching that goal, the miscreants keep finding new ways and means to pump narcotics into the market and more and more people fall prey to this evil.
