DIBRUGARH: The Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) on Tuesday staged a sit-in at Chowkidinghee in Dibrugarh against the government's decision to teach Mathematics and Science in the English language from the next academic session in all government and provincialized Assamese and other vernacular medium schools.

he members staged protest for an hour demanding withdrawal of the decision immediately. "We strongly oppose the decisions taken by the government. We demand that they re-think and withdraw it immediately," said Paragjyoti Baruah, president, Dibrugarh district AJP. He said, "Prime Minister Narendra Modi has given preference to local languages on one side and on the other side in Assam, the government wants to teach Science and Maths in English. We oppose such a move of the government."

The State Cabinet on July 28 decided that from the academic year 2023, Mathematics and Science will be taught in English from Class 3 till Class 12 in all government schools. It also approved the introduction of a dual medium of instruction from class 6 to class12 in Assamese and vernacular medium schools under the State Government. It was also decided that Geography and History will replace Social Studies as compulsory subjects in the school curriculum.

Meanwhile, AJP submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to withdrew the cabinet decision.
