JORHAT: The number of crimes has been increasing in Jorhat, Assam, during the past several days in an unprecedented way. A case of the kidnapping of a teenager for ransom came to light on the evening of November 30, sparking concern among the locals even though the excitement around last Saturday's shootout has not even begun to fade.

Amarjit Prasad (17), the son of Radhe Prasad, a resident of Bansbari in the town of Jorhat and a mason by trade, rode his bike out of the house on November 30 at 4 p.m., according to the source. Amarjit informed his mother that he will soon be returning before departing from the house.

But after a prolonged absence, Amarjit's family members made repeated attempts to reach him on his mobile phone, which they discovered to be off.

But on November 30, about eight o'clock in the evening, a young man picked up the phone and informed the kidnapped boy's father that his son had been taken. In addition to this, the kidnapper asked the family for Rs. 50 lakh ransom.

The tragedy put the entire family in a state of disbelief. On the other side, a case has been opened at the police station in Jorhat Sadar.

The Jorhat police have started their investigation and are attempting to determine the youth's whereabouts based on the phone call they received.

A young man named Biswajit Hazarika was abducted in Guwahati in another case of kidnapping. From the family members, the kidnappers had sought a sizable ransom. A pharmacy in Jayanagar was where Biswajit was employed. While walking back from his place of employment, he was abducted.

According to sources, the city's overall crime rate dropped by about 48% between January and July of this year, according to Guwahati Police Commissioner Harmeet Singh.
