GUWAHATI: Adding to the spate of cyber crimes recently being reported in the state, Assam Police on Saturday nabbed four individuals, including a journalist working in a local news portal, in Jagiraod under Morigaon district on the suspicion of them being involved in criminal activities.
Acting on the basis of a tip-off, the Jagiroad Police stopped a vehicle, suspected of being used for criminal activities, during stop-and-search checking. Upon searching the vehicle, the police found a number of incriminating documents and equipment, including bank papers, mobile phones, and others suspected of being used for cyber criminal activity.
The police also examined the mobile phones of the suspected cybercriminals and found some apps downloaded on them that were likely to have been used to conduct cyber crimes.
On the suspicion of their being involved in cyber crimes, the police detained four individuals travelling in the car, including a journalist identified as Javed Khan. When the police conducted questioning on the apprehended individuals, they came to know that they were operating doubtful activities from a rented accomodation in Guwahati’s Six Mile area.
The four suspected individuals detained at the checkpoint have been identified as Javed Khan, Ijazul Haque Kader, Shahanur Alam and Asanur Islam.
The police pursued the matter further and a team of police from Morigaon district reached the city and conducted a raid at the rental house, along with the Guwahati Police.
During the raid, the police recovered 281 SIM cards, five mobile phones, along with a vehicle bearing the registration number AS 01 EE 7686 and a number of objectionable documents.
Following the seizure, the police are further investigating the matter in the wake of the raid on the rental place of the suspected cyber criminals.
The matter is being investigated further by the Jagiraod Police under the supervision of Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Samiran Baishya of Morigaon Crime Branch.
ASP Samiran Baishya informed that the suspected individuals are currently in detention at the police station for further questioning. The police will initiate legal action after more light is shed in the matter.
