GUWAHATI : Amidst the ongoing conflict between man and elephant, an incident took place on 27th of December where a jumbo calf was rescued from Bijni. Interestingly, the baby elephant was recovered from a kitchen of a house in Assam's Chirang district.
The house was empty and the owners were unknown about the incident. It has been suspected by the concerned authorities that, the calf might have got separated from its herd and walked along with a herd of cows that was returning from a paddy field.
The rescue of the little jumbo was made from a house in Khungkrajhara situation near Manas National Park. Residents were not present in the house when the elephant was being taken out of their kitchen.
The owner, Praneshwar Narzary was later informed about the occurrence by forest department officials. The people staying nearby had immediately informed the forest department about a calf entering a house in the region.
Personnels from the Kuklung forest department rushed to the spot and started the process. The baby elephant was shifted to the Banhbari forest range on the 28th of December.
The state is not alien to the fact that, elephants are continuously entering the human habitat amidst the winter chills, in search of food. There is a rise in man-elephant conflict in Assam, leading to deaths of many.
It is be noted that, two people died due to elephant attack on the 25th of December in Sonari. A wild elephant crossed its boundary in search of food and went violent on the people.
Huts were destructed and two individual identified as Bikash Tanti and Gobind Tanti got killed.
On the same day, a group of picnickers were attacked by a wild jumbo in Shiva Kunda, a famous picnic spot. While many of them managed to escape the attack one person got critically injured and died in the episode.
