Assam: Kidnapped drivers rescued by Cachar police

After a long 45-hour chase, Cachar police had succeeded in rescuing the three drivers who were kidnapped at gunpoint from a stone quarry in Joypur area bordering Dima Hasao.

SILCHAR: After a long 45-hour chase, Cachar police had succeeded in rescuing the three drivers who were kidnapped at gunpoint from a stone quarry in Joypur area bordering Dima Hasao. On Monday wee hours, Cachar police along with its Dima Hasao counterpart traced Raju Tanti, Amit Orang and Biswa Dhar, from a dense forest in Assam-Manipur border. The drivers of vehicles carrying stones were kidnapped on Saturday early morning by five unidentified gunmen. IGP, Law and Order Prashanta Kumar Bhuiyan on Monday informed the mediapersons that the miscreants belonged to Zeliarong United Front, a Manipur based militant outfit of the Naga Zeme tribe had kidnapped the drivers after their demand for ransom was turned down by the local contractor. However, the incident had no link with the ongoing ethnic clashes in Manipur, Bhuiyan clarified. He said, these small outfits usually come down from the hills during the Christmas to collect money from the local traders. Bhuiyan further added that the miscreants did not misbehave with the drivers, even offered them rice and chicken.
