Assam: Koch Gaon of Jamugurihat gears up for ‘Kalia Daman Bhaona’

JAMUGURIHAT: Jamugurihat of Sonitpur district is popularly known for its rich cultural heritage, namghars, temples and xatras, Baresohoriya Bhaona etc. Kalia Daman bhaona of Koch Gaon here is one of the oldest bhaonas of the greater Jamugurihat area. This year, the 228th edition of oldest bhaona is scheduled to be held at historic Koch Gaon namghar premises on September 16, stated a press release issued by Chitra Bora and Sujit Saikia, president and secretary of the Koch Gaon Village Development Committee.

The villagers of the area will keep fasting for two days for the bhaona festival as per rituals. Devotees and audiences from far and wide visit Jamugurihat to have a look at the spectacular view of the bhaona. Thousands of devotees throng the bhaona site irrespective of caste, creed, race and religion. In addition to this, there is an age-old belief among people that anyone who illuminates an earthen lamp during the bhaona festival, then no evil elements can hamper the peace and harmony of the concerned person’s family. Therefore, people from distant places visit this bhaona site and illuminate earthen lamps inside the namghar premises.
