KOKRAJHAR: The Kokrajhar Press Club (KPC) in connection with the observation of National Press Day carried out a cleanliness drive in association with Swima Athing Group (SAG) early in the morning at new flyover stretch, Jangkhrithai Fwthar in Kokrajhar on Thursday to foster clean and green Kokrajhar.

Chairperson of Kokrajhar Municipal Board (KMB) Pratibha Brahma flagged off the cleanliness drive. The members of KPC and SAG took part in the cleanliness drive, picking up one time used plastics and plastic materials thrown in both sides of the road. The KPC and SAG jointly carried out a cleanliness drive and plantation programme in the same stretch on the occasion of observation of Gandhi Jayanti on October 2. They cleaned up the new flyover road but some sections of people and youths with lack of civic sense throw plastics and empty alcohol bottles on both sides of the road in a regular manner that makes the road dirty with waste materials.

Talking to media persons, Joleswar Basumatary, retired teacher of Salakati High School said the KPC in association with SAG carried out the cleanliness drive in the new flyover road as they normally did from time to time to make people aware about the necessity of clean and hygienic Kokrajhar. He said the efforts could be small but it had a big message to the citizens and upcoming youths towards making Kokrajhar a clean and green city. He called upon all to be part of the initiative of clean and green Kokrajhar for a healthy environment and appealed to all citizens of Kokrajhar to make themselves aware of disposing of plastic and plastic waste materials saying that the management of waste materials is utmost important in every household.

Block Elementary Education Officer (BEEO) Swmdwn Narzary on behalf of the Swima Athing Group said cleanliness should be a daily practice of every citizen in their homes and in the society. He said health will be good when the environment is good and thus growing more trees for a green environment and cleaning of waste materials is to be given utmost importance. He also said for the citizens of Kokrajhar who are conscious of good health, there is an extreme necessity for safe walking zones in certain places. He further said since the new flyover stretch was one of the finest roads with natural beauty in Kokrajhar, it should be announced as a walking zone by Kokrajhar district administration by halting plying vehicles for at least 2 to 2-30 hours early in the morning.

On the other hand, the Kokrajhar Press Club observed the National Press Day at its auditorium hall with a simple programme. Earlier, the flag of KPC was hoisted by its president Kishore Sarkar while vice president A. Kr. Basumatary paid floral tribute to the members who passed away from a variety of illnesses.
