Assam: Lakhimpur Congress protests attack on Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra

LAKHIMPUR: Hundreds of Congress workers and supporters staged protest in Lakhimpur district on Monday at around 2.30 pm over alleged “planned attacks” on Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra in Assam, attack on Assam Pradesh Congress Committee president Bhupen Kumar Borah and vandalism of banners, posters and hoardings, installed to welcome Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra in North Lakhimpur town.

Regarding the issues, the Lakhimpur District Congress Committee, along with its brother-sister organizations, led by LDCC president Gagan Borah and other district Congress leaders, took out a protest rally from Rajiv Bhawan, located at North Lakhimpur town. When the protesters marched forward towards the NH-15 to block the road, the security personnel prevented the rally from proceeding further by installing barricade at the main gate of the Rajiv Bhawan. As a consequence, the protesters demonstrated there for hours by shouting number of slogans to demand action against the attackers on Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra, APCC president Bhupen Kumar Borah and those miscreants who vandalized banners, posters and hoardings installed in North Lakhimpur town to welcome the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra. The protesters also shouted slogans to slam the BJP-led governments at the Centre and in the State, Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma for adopting “various tricks” to make the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra unsuccessful in Assam.

While leading the demonstration, LDCC president Gagan Borah, administrative general secretary Gangajyoti Tayegam, former Lakhimpur Congress MLA Ghana Burhagohain, District Mahila Congress president Hafiza Begum came down heavily against BJP governments for their alleged vindictive politics against Congress and their autocratic rule in the State as well as the nation. Gagan Borah alleged that the attack on Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra, APCC president and vandalism of Congress banners posters and hoardings installed in North Lakhimpur town to welcome the Yatra had exposed fascism and hooliganism and with these acts national level Congress leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, had been extremely insulted in Assam. He also alleged that democracy is getting killed during the rule of incumbent governments. He declared that Lakhimpur Congress would initiate stir from grassroot level to save democracy in the State.
