Assam: Lakhimpur faces extreme power shortage

LAKHIMPUR: Lakhimpur district is currently grappling with a critical power shortage, despite claims by the Power Minister that there are no power cuts in the State.

The power crisis turned extreme on Thursday and Friday and put the people of the district into too much trouble at a time when the scorching heat of the sun and the temperature in the weather have affected them critically. Amid such a situation, North Lakhimpur Electrical Sub-Division was compelled to issue a notice appealing to the consumers to cooperate with the office concerned. Through the appeal, the North Lakhimpur Electrical Sub-Division informed that the office concerned had to cut power in various 11KV Feeders under the Sub-Division reluctantly on Thursday as per load shedding instruction received from the 132/33KV Grid Sub-Station, located at Nolkota of North Lakhimpur as a result of which the power consumers under the Electrical Sub-Division had to be deprived of normal power supply.

Regarding the issue, while investigated, sources on Friday said to this correspondent that only 20MW load allotment was imposed by the State Load Despatch Centre (SLDC) to North Lakhimpur on Thursday during the peak hours due to low power availability. “But in reality, North Lakhimpur received only 12MW power on Thursday,” the sources added.

Notably, there are five 33/11KV Electrical Control Rooms or Sub-Stations under North Lakhimpur Electrical Sub-Division, located at Panigaon, Ramanichuk, Bowalguri, Balijan and Boginadi. The number of power consumers under the Electrical Sub-Division is more than 70,000 while the peak hours’ demand for power in the sub-division is more than 24MW. Under such circumstances, receiving only 12 MW power by the Electrical Sub-Division has been considered to be extremely low and poor against the demand. The peak hour demand for power in Lakhimpur district, including the Dhakuakhana subdivision, is 42MW-50MW as per information received from the source.

It is anticipated that the crisis of power has resulted in extensive outages across all control rooms under the Lakhimpur district. It has also affected the businesses in the district in addition to the daily life of the people.
