Guwahati: With the ceaseless rainfall in the past couple of days, rail and road connectivity between Guwahati and Silchar was blocked due to multiple landslides at several zones between Sonapur to Ratacherra Petrol Pump.
This ongoing severe rainy season has led to the difficulty of hundreds of people stranded on the road between the two cities.
As per reports, numerous buses, cars, and trucks too got stranded due to multiple harsh landslides in the state.
Dr Rumi Nath, the ex-MLA of Borkhola was also there among the many people who got stuck in between Sonapur to Ratacherra Petrol Pump.
Earlier today, the route from Silchar-Ratachera-Khliehriat has been blocked following the fresh landslide.
As per the East Jaintia Hills Police, the landslide occurred in Kuliang village on National Highway (NH) 06 on Tuesday morning. Following the disruptions, the concerned departments have been deployed to clear the roads and assistance is being given to stranded passengers.
Expressing the unpleasant experience, Dr Rumi Nath said, "It's a very precarious situation as thousands of people are stranded at a stretch in this difficult situation for the last two days. I have also spoken to the Deputy Commissioner of Cachar and informed her about the helplessness." She further added that there was a scarcity of food and drinking water at a time when everybody was facing many difficulties, especially the small kids. Dr Nath then requested the Chief Minister of Assam to take prompt measures in order to carry out the rescue and relief functioning.
According to reports, the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF), Fire and Emergency Services, Indian Air Force (IAF) and district administration have initiated actions for the rescue operations in various corners of the state. Around 57,000 individuals covering seven districts of Assam have been distressed due to the present terrific situation created by the ongoing flood.
The Cachar district administration has arranged transportation to release passengers to Silchar Airport from where they can reach their individual destinations. The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) officials informed that 1,658 distraught flood-affected people have taken shelter in several relief camps that were set up by the district administration.
