Assam: Leprosy Identification Campaign in Sonitpur

Additional District Commissioner (Health) Tahir Alam of Sonitpur district inaugurated the district level programme of leprosy detection campaign at the premises of Maternal and Child Health Center at Parua, Tezpur.

TEZPUR: Additional District Commissioner (Health) Tahir Alam of Sonitpur district inaugurated the district level programme of leprosy detection campaign at the premises of Maternal and Child Health Center at Parua, Tezpur. The event was attended by Dr. Ziauddin Ahmed, Joint Director of Health, Sonitpur District, Dr. T. B. Chetri, Zonal Leprosy Officer, District, Dr. Biman Sharma, Additional Chief Medical and Health Officer, Dr. Dipti Barua, Superintendent of Kankalta Civil Hospital and nursing school students.

Attending the programme, Dr TB Setri said that during this week-long leprosy detection campaign, ASHAs and health workers will go from house to house to check everyone and refer suspected patients to doctors for leprosy detection. Dr Ziauddin Ahmed, Joint Director, Health Department, said leprosy is not a congenital or hereditary disease. It is caused by a bacterium called Mylobacterium leprae and can be cured completely with timely treatment. Leprosy medicines are available completely free of charge at all health centres. Additional District Commissioner (Health) Tahir Alam urged the people to cooperate in the campaign.
