Assam: Local Youth Takes on Farming of Dragon Fruits in Jamugurihat

The youth mentioned that he is looking at increased income and wants to expand his farm in the future.

JAMUGURIHAT: In recent times, some parts of Northeast India have emerged as excellent destinations for the cultivation of exotic fruits including kiwis, passion fruits and dragon fruits And parts of Assam have been proven to have the perfect conditions for the growing of dragon fruits. To that end, an educated youth of the state has successfully taken up the farming of the crop.

With the aim of being self-sufficient, an enterprising man from the Number 2 Bordikrai village of Jamugurihat named Basnet had decided to set up a dragon fruit farm spanning across a 1 bigha plot in the region.

As the crop has started bearing fruit, he has set an example for others in the nearby areas to take up the cultivation of similar high-value crops using organic methods. This youth mentioned that he is looking at increased income and wants to expand his farm in the future.

Another farmer-entrepreneur of the state has been able to achieve self-reliance and generate employment for the local people in the Biswanath region of the state. A large number of vegetables including 140 varieties of tomatoes, 80 varieties of chillies and 52 varieties of cabbages, broccoli and cauliflowers, were successfully cultivated in the farms of Pabhoi Greens in Biswanath. The facility itself spreads over a huge plot of land with multiple fisheries within it.

A huge number of tomatoes varying in shapes and sizes as well as flavours and textures were produced this season. The weights of these tomatoes range from 250 grams to 5 grams while colours vary from bring red to green and yellow. Cabbages, cauliflowers and broccoli of 52 varieties have also been produced on the farm. Along with a total of 80 varieties of chillies of different shapes, sizes, flavours and heat. The experimental cultivation of these crops has been done by the agri-based youth entrepreneur Neelam Dutta in Pabhoi Greens.
