Assam: Major Heroin Bust Worth Rs. 3 Crores in Naharkatia; Three Women Arrested

GUWAHATI: In a significant development in the ongoing war against drugs, Assam Police made a major heroin seizure worth an estimated Rs. 3 crores during a joint operation in the Naharkatia region of Assam. This operation, led by the Naharkatia Police and Joypur Police under the supervision of Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Naba Bora, resulted in the discovery of 29 soapboxes containing heroin from a four-wheeler.

The illicit drugs, weighing a total of 348 grams, were intercepted while in transit by three women hailing from Arunachal Pradesh. They had reportedly smuggled the narcotics from Dimapur in Nagaland using a train and were en route to their native state, Arunachal Pradesh, with the contraband concealed in a WagonR car bearing the registration number AS06 AJ 5275. The police apprehended the vehicle near Joypur Rainforest Gate, preventing the drugs from reaching their destination.

This operation marked a significant success in the ongoing battle against drug trafficking, as the seized heroin had an estimated market value of Rs. 3 crores, underscoring the magnitude of the illicit drug trade in the region.

Following the successful operation, the police took swift action, arresting not only the three women involved in the drug smuggling but also the driver of the vehicle. A case was registered under case number 56/23 at the Joypur Police Station, citing violations of the 21(C)/29 NDPS (Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances) Act of the Indian Penal Code in connection with the seizure.
