Assam: Man Dies After Being Struck by Lightning in Karimganj

GUWAHATI: With persistent rain and thunderstorms reported in several areas of Assam, where one person was killed on June 17 as a result of a lightning strike in the Karimganj district, the northeast has been suffering from unfavorable weather conditions.

Priyo Ranjan Das has been identified as the deceased. According to sources, the incident was reported in the Ratabari constituency of the Karimganj district. It should be noted that the Indian Meteorological Department has issued an orange alert over parts of the northeast due to the region's recent heavy rains.

Meghalaya, Assam, Sikkim, and Arunachal Pradesh have all reported flooding and landslide incidents.

Meanwhile, recently, in the Golaghati area of Tripura's Sepahijala district, a devastating incident involving numerous lightning strikes resulted in one fatality and five injuries.

While tending to his land's crops, the victim, 58-year-old farmer Badal Dey, tragically perished from the intense lightning strike. According to eyewitnesses, Dey was diligently working on his farming tasks in the rain when the impact of the lightning caused him to suddenly lose consciousness.

Locals and family members quickly came to his aid and rushed him to the hospital in Bishalgarh subdivision. Despite their best efforts and the quick action of the medical team, the attending doctor pronounced Badal Dey dead.

Basanti Saha from the Jangalia neighbourhood, Pabitra Das from the East Lakshmibil neighbourhood, Kulsum Bibi from Arbind Nagar, Sumitra Sarkar Bhowmik from the North Brajpur neighbourhood, and Chandan Debnath from the Champamura neighbourhood were among the injured people who were severely harmed by the lightning strike. Basanti Saha, Pabitra Das, Kulsum Bibi, and Sumitra Sarkar Bhowmik were sent to Tripura Medical College and GB Hospitals in Agartala for advanced care after the injured victims received immediate medical attention. At the moment, Chandan Debnath is receiving treatment at the Bishalgarh hospital.

In an incident that happened at Bardowa Luit Chapari in Majuli in April of this year, several animals were hurt while five livestock perished as a result of lightning strikes.

When the incident happened, the sky looked perilous and cloudy. The lightning struck the animals as they were grazing in a wide open field. Five animals were instantly killed by the lightning's intensity.
