Assam Man Marries Seven Women, Arrested in Baksa

Acting on the complaint the police arrested the accused, who was on the run after the incident, with the help of local people.

GUWAHATI: In a shocking incident, a man from Barapeta Nepali Basti, Baksa has married seven women in different courses of time in recent years. The police have arrested the man based on one of his wives' complaints.

According to reports, Bhojraj Dorji aka Raju married seven women one after another by enticing them, he formed covert affairs with them and married the women one after the other.

However, his marriage was not so successful as he started to torture and physically abuse his wives. He even beat up his wives demanding dowry. Unable to pay dowry to him, his six wives already returned to their paternal homes, local people said.

Meanwhile, a few months ago, the accused married another woman, and his torture and abuse again started on his new wife.

"Every night he returned to home in a drunken state and started beating his wife," police said. On Monday night too, he badly beat up his wife, who is now pregnant, with a bamboo stick. Bhojraj's neighbors reached his house after listening to the crying sound of his wife and rescued the woman.

On the following day, the wife registered a complaint in the Labodanguri Police outpost against her husband.

Acting on the complaint the police arrested the accused, who was on the run after the incident, with the help of local people. The local people demanded adequate punishment for the accused.

Earlier, an accused in a domestic violence case fled from the custody of Dispur Police on Tuesday while he was being taken for medical examination. However, the accused was chased by police officials, who managed to nab him in the Beltola area.

According to reports, the accused — Utpal Saikia was held following an FIR lodged by his wife alleging domestic violence. He is a native of Dibrugarh and was residing at Beltola.
