GUWAHATI: In a significant operation, the Guwahati city police successfully dismantled a large-scale cyber fraud racket, resulting in the arrest of three individuals and the confiscation of a substantial amount of objectionable items. Acting on reliable intelligence received from the Crime Branch, the Dispur police conducted a raid on Builtwell Apartment located near Jama Masjid in Kalyanpur.

During the search operation, law enforcement authorities made noteworthy recoveries, including 58 Airtel SIM cards, 3 Jio SIM cards, 107 Idea SIM cards, 634 Vodafone SIM cards, 12 different sets of mobile phones, two laptops, two memory cards (32 GB and 8 GB), 10 ATM cards, and stamps from various colleges in Bihar, Bangalore, and Assam (5 in total). Additionally, the police found 239 Gpay UPI scanners.

The arrested individuals, identified as Sheikhuddin (24), Inzamamul Islam (26), and Wakibul Islam (23), hail from Morigaon and South Salmara-Mankachar districts respectively. According to the police, the primary objective of this fraudulent network was to obtain loans from online lending platforms using forged documents. They predominantly targeted and secured student loans by fabricating documents.

During the operation, the police also discovered college stamps, a printer, photo papers, college marksheets, and documents from various colleges, further solidifying the evidence against the accused. It was revealed that the fraudsters acquired SIM cards from different service providers, enabling them to create virtual bank accounts and, in some cases, physical ones as well. They submitted these fabricated documents to banks in order to secure loans.

Authorities have registered a case against the three individuals under the relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). The investigation is ongoing to uncover any additional connections and potential accomplices involved in the cyber fraud racket.

This successful operation conducted by the Guwahati city police highlights their commitment to combating cybercrime and safeguarding the financial interests of the public. The seizure of a wide array of incriminating items and the arrests of the perpetrators serve as a warning to potential fraudsters operating in the region. The police's swift action in response to intelligence inputs has not only disrupted the criminal network but has also taken a step towards restoring trust in online lending platforms and financial institutions.
