GUWAHATI : Continuing its efforts to free government land from encroachers, Assam government has yet again launched an eviction drive on 26th of December morning. The drive has been initiated in Baghbor Satra in Barpeta district on 400 acres of government land.

A notice was sent to the residents of that particular area, a week prior to the eviction drive by the district administration. However, the notice was partially followed by the people residing in the place, as 30 families were still staying there illegally.

The drive on the 400 acres of land was executed by the district administration and security personnel comprising a team of police and CRPF officials.

Reportedly, 45 families were staying illegally in the government owned land. The residents claimed that they are now homeless as they were living in the land for 15 years now. The government has dragged them to the roads with no shelter, they alleged.

It is to be noted that people had started farming in the government land without any sort of legal sanction. Furthermore, they  had also dug out ponds in the land for personal purposes. As per the reports, the land was issued in the name of Bodo Krishak Samiti back in 1992.

A week earlier, a huge drive was conducted on 19th of December, on 397 acres of government land in Nagaon.

Government is continuously conducting massive eviction drives in various regions of the state.

Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma, asserted that the administration will continue its drive against the invaders, and discussion upon this issue is just pointless. He further informed that, all individuals regardless of his or her religion have to vacate the government land, including historical sites like Batadrava.

When Congress MLA Rakibul Hussain, demanded water supply for the evicted ones in Batadrava, the CM claimed that it is the duty of NGOs in the state to provide water to the evicted people who broke the law.
