GUWAHATI: A big fire ravaged the Ratanpur bazaar section of Hailakandi in Assam, destroying at least 20 shops and other commercial establishments in the massive fire in the market on Ratan Road.
According to officials, the incident on Thursday midnight destroyed commercial assets worth Rs. Crore. The fire was brought under control by local residents with the assistance of the fire department.
Although the source of the fire is unknown, an electrical short circuit could be the cause as suspected by the local residents. However, businessmen whose stores and facilities were destroyed blamed the local authorities for the poor condition of the electrical connections in the area and demands compensation.
On Friday, another massive fire broke out at a plant in Sonapur, near the Assam-Meghalaya border, and ten fire tenders from both states arrived to extinguish the flames.
On Friday, a major fire broke out at the Assam Electricity Grid Corporation Limited (AEGCL) Samaguri power grid station in Nagaon district.
On the other hand, in February 2023, at least 300 shops in Assam's Jorhat district were destroyed by a major fire. However, no one was hurt in the incident.
Previously, in 2022, a massive fire destroyed several stores in Jorhat's Marwari Patty.
Meanwhile, in April 2023, a massive fire broke out at the Central Clinical Laboratory on the first floor of Guwahati Medical College and Hospital's old structure. However, no one was hurt in the incident.
On the evening of March 11, a terrible fire broke out in two coaches of a moving train in the Guwahati neighborhood of Chandmari. When the tragedy occurred, the train was on its way to Lower Assam. The cause of the fire is yet unknown, and an investigation is being conducted.
On May 9, a large fire broke out in Assam's Baihata Chariali, destroying multiple business facilities as it spread from a chowk in Bezera village. According to reports, the fire devoured up to seven shops in the area.
