TAMULPUR: Human-animal conflicts continue unabated in the Northeast Indian state of Assam as new incidents come to light every day. In one of the most recent developments, hundreds of wild elephants were spotted entering a village in the Tamulpur district.

The incident took place in the Shantipur Village of the Tamulpur district on Friday. The time at which the large herd consisting of more than a hundred wild elephants entered the village coincided with the time when the school was getting over, triggering massive fear among the people.

It can be noted that this village is located near the International Border between India and Bhutan, and it is not rare to sight wild elephants. But such a large herd stomping into the human habitat has terrorised the villagers of the region.

The villagers worked in tandem with the personnel of the forest department as they attempted to chase away the herd back into the forest. They lit fires, used explosives and tried other means as well to chase the animals away, but without much effect, an environment of tension erupted as soon as the animals entered the village.

According to reports, the herd of wild elephants have been terrorising the people of the locality in the past month. The herd which came out of the forest area in search of food, have destroyed a large party of the paddy cultivation and triggered fears among the locals.

A ten-year-old child was previously injured in yet another incident of human-animal conflict in the state of Assam. The incident took place in the Jyoti Nagar locality near the Forest Office in Mariani town. According to local sources, the child had gone outside his residence to take part in the Kali Puja celebrations at the Jyoti Nagar Kali Puja Mandap in the evening. And the wild animal reportedly attacked him on his way to the festival. He was taken to a medical facility in Mariani, where he was administered first aid.
