GUWAHATI: In a historic move, the Chief Minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma, is set to inaugurate "East Tech 2023," a groundbreaking event showcasing the latest advancements in defence weaponry and equipment technology on Tuesday. This unprecedented exhibition, hosted at the Maniram Dewan Trade Centre in Guwahati, marks the first time such a comprehensive event has been organized in the entire Northeast region.

"East Tech 2023" is a joint initiative led by the Eastern Army Command in collaboration with the Ministry of Commerce and Industries, Government of Assam. The primary objective is to raise awareness about contemporary technologies and hardware solutions available from Indian defence manufacturers under the 'Raksha Atmanirbharat' (self-reliant defence) initiative. The event seeks to address the ever-evolving operational requirements of the Eastern Command through the integration of indigenous, innovative, and future-oriented technologies.

The distinguished guest list includes Bimal Borah, Minister of Industries & Commerce, Sports & Youth Welfare, Cultural Affairs, Power & Tourism; Lieutenant General RP Kalita, General Officer Commanding in Chief, Eastern Command; Lieutenant General Manish Erry, General Officer Commanding, Gajraj Corps; Ravi Kota, Additional Chief Secretary for Home & Political Department, Passport & Prison, Industries, Commerce & Public Enterprises Department, and numerous other high-level dignitaries from government, military, paramilitary, police, and civil society.

As part of this comprehensive event, a seminar on niche technologies in collaboration with IIT Guwahati and a Medical Symposium with AIIMS, Guwahati, have been planned, adding depth and knowledge-sharing to the program.

Lt Col Mahendra Rawat, PRO Defence Guwahati, emphasized, "The aim of the event is 'To facilitate Eastern Command in meeting its operational challenges by incorporating contemporary indigenous technology.'" Rawat also highlighted that a wide range of Indian manufacturers, including MSMEs, DRDO, and DPSUs, will showcase their cutting-edge weapons and equipment technology during the two-day event. This initiative further aims to provide a platform for startups and major players in the Defence sector from Assam and other Northeastern states to exhibit their latest innovations.

"East Tech 2023" is expected to foster closer collaboration with the Indian private sector and research and development organizations, including participation from IITs and various research academia. It aligns with the 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' and 'Raksha Atmanirbharta' campaigns, promoting the exposure of indigenously developed weapons and equipment systems, which could subsequently strengthen the capabilities of the Indian Armed Forces and promote self-reliance in defense.

The event underscores the critical strategic importance of self-reliance in the defense sector and its role in enhancing India's national power. With rapid advancements and global recognition, the Indian defense industry is poised to contribute significantly to India's emergence as an economic powerhouse. The participation of private manufacturers, state governments, and defense manufacturers from the Northeastern states will not only facilitate the modernization of the Armed Forces but also create opportunities for new startups and existing defense manufacturers.

It is noteworthy that the first day of the event will be exclusively reserved for defense personnel, while the second day will open its doors to the civilian audience, making it an inclusive platform for all.
