SILCHAR : People from the neighbouring states who had taken shelter in Lakhipur of Cachar district would be treated as ‘guests in distress’, stated Assam Police Director General G P Singh. For the last two days, 41 Meitei Manipuri families from Mizoram had crossed border to reach Cachar as some Mizo organisations had reportedly threatened them to quit the state peacefully. After the escalation of ethnic clashes in Manipur in May, a good number of Kuki and Mizo people had taken shelter in Lakhipur. A few relief camps had been set up in places like Marquline bordering Manipur and Kuki refugees had been staying there since then. Situation in Manipur had further deteriorated following the reports of women being stripped off and gang raped. In this backdrop Manipuris residing in Mizoram felt insecure and in last two days a good number of them reached Lakhipur. Local MLA Kausik Rai said, till now the situation was under control, but police and administration had been constantly monitoring all the development. “We from Assam government have been treating all of them as our guests irrespective of which community they belong to,” Rai said. Cachar SP Numal Mahatta had personally visited the relief camps and assured the refugees of all sort of cooperation and security. DGP Singh who arrived here on Monday had discussed the issue with the local police.
