Assam Millet Mission across State for the session 2022-23

NAGAON: The State government has decided to launch a mega demonstrative farming scheme, Assam Millet Mission across the State for the session 2022-23. With a view to expanding and increasing millet cultivation in the State, the government has initiated the scheme across the State.

The prospects and aims of the mission are to set better food habits among the people of the zone with the millet crops as the millets contain sufficient vitamins, calcium, iron, zinc. Besides, the millets contain less carbohydrates as it is found in wheat or rice for which it can be the best hygiene food for all diabetic patients of the region, a release added.

As part of the scheme, the district agriculture department selected over 60 hectares of farmland under 13 agriculture circles in the district for farming millet crops especially 'finger-millet' which is locally known as 'Ragi'.

Talking to this correspondent this afternoon here, the district agriculture officer Tarun Hazarika said that the district agriculture department enlisted 245 farmers for 45 mini-kits and 200 technical demonstrative farming of millet crops especially 'finger-millet' under 13 ADO circles in Nagaon district for the session 2022-23. The officials as well as other experts from the department concerned have already started the distribution of seeds among the selected farmers.

Besides, training camps as well as other technical awareness for farming of millet crops were also being carried out among the selected farmers of the district by the district agriculture department here, Hazarika accorded further.

He said that as part of the training programme, the department concerned organized a training session at Morongial in Barhampur LAC today in which he was present as the chief guest.
