Assam: Mixed Reactions Against Govt's Decision To Add 60 Villages In BTR

The protest are initiated by many people who belongs to the non-Bodo community.

GUWAHATI : Varied parts of Assam has witnessed protests in the past few days as a result of the government's decision to add on 60 more villages in Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR). 

The protest are initiated by many people who belong to the non-Bodo community. On 30th of January, Monday, people burnt down tyres in roads to demonstrate objection against the decision to include Gohpur district in the BTR. 

The enraged protesters restricted movement in the national highway and raised their voice against the government's conclusion. The protesters are of the view that, the government without any sort of discussion or consent from the general public has made this decision. 

The non bodo communities are totally against it and has also stated that, if the conclusion is not withdrawn by the administration, they will resort to more intense protests in the state. 

On 28th of January, two students bodies initiated protest in Sonitpur and declared a 12 hour bandh in the region. All Adivasi Students' Union of Assam (AASAA) and All Assam Tea Tribes Students' Union (AATTSA) had called for the shutdown to protest against the same.

The Bodo Accord was signed between the Central Government as well as the fractions of the militant outfit National Democratic Front of Bodoland allowed for the addition of all villages near the recognised BTR region with a majority of people belonging to the Bodo community, to be added into the region.

The CM announced regarding the matter on the occasion of 74th Republic Day. The decision has witnessed mixed reactions from varied groups of people. While one hand, people are setting tyres on fire, on the other hand, Chief Executive Member (CEM) of the BTR Pramod Boro on Friday welcomed the Chief Minister's announcement and said, "The dream of the Father of Bodos, Bodofa Upendra Nath Brahma, is going to be fulfilled".
