Assam: National Press Day observed

TINSUKIA: A discussion on the occasion of National Press Day (NPD) was organized on Thursday at the conference hall of the SDOC Margherita by the Sub-Divisional Administration (Civil) and Office of the SDIPRO, Margherita.

The discussion on the theme ‘Media in the era of Artificial Intelligence’ was initiated by Pritom Gogoi, Assistant Commissioner of Margherita, who delivered the lecture after felicitation of senior journalists of Margherita and Digboi. Rana Jyoti Neog, senior journalist of Margherita recited a poem ‘Mukha’ on the occasion followed by a lecture.

Senior journalists Ramprasad Ambedkar, Samiran Borthakur, Sonaram Kalita, Binananda Konwar, Partha Pratim Goswami, Manash Pratim Gogoi and Pranjal P Bhuyan also spoke and presented their insights on the theme. A melodious song was also sung by Samprity Borthakur. A very coherent speech was delivered by Pronamika Konwar, Assitant Commissioner on the relevance of Artificial Intelligence. Margherita SDIPRO Gurmeet Suri ended the programme with vote of thanks. The programme was also attended by Miranda Thakur, Sub-Registrar and other administrative staff.

BISWANATH CHARIALI: National Press Day was observed in Biswanath on Thursday under the initiative of Biswanath District Information and Public Relations Department in collaboration with Biswanath District Administration. Dr Neha Yadav, District Commissioner, Biswanath, delivered the welcome address at the event of National Press Day. Participating as the keynote speaker on the occasion, eminent essayist and litterateur Dilip Kumar Bhattacharya presented a rich, thoughtful and important discussion on the main theme of the National Press Day, ‘Media in the Era of Artificial Intelligence’.

Additional District Commissioner of Biswanath Dhrubajyoti Das, Assistant Commissioner and In-charge District Information and Public Relations Officer Pushpankar Patir and others were present on the occasion while the event was hosted by Ranjit Saikia on behalf of the Public Relations Department.

TEZPUR: On the occasion of National Press Day, the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism, Tezpur University organized a host of activities, ranging from wall magazine inauguration to students’ presentation. PJ Baruah, noted journalist graced the event as the keynote speaker.

Prof. Abhijit Bora, Head of the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism delivered the welcome address. Baruah delivered an insightful lecture on the issue of media trials in the contemporary scenario.

Speaking on the occasion, Baruah said that although media scenario has transformed drastically over the years; but the main objective of journalism has remained the same, i.e to Inform, Educate and Guide. Giving examples of some cases of media trials, the veteran editor explained said that in some of the cases, media played a very active role in bringing justice. However, in some cases the media behaved like a court and gave their judgement much before the actual court gave verdict.

Differentiating the role of print and electronic media with regard to media trials, Baruah remarked that most of the times media trials are run by audio visual mediums and not so by the print media. “Print media is regulated by Press Council of India, whereas audio-visual medium functions without regulation”, Baruah said. “Media should only report facts and should not be party to the proceedings”, he further added.

During the occasion, a bilingual bi-monthly science magazine “Vigyan Sanchar” and the departmental news bulletin “TU Times” was also inaugurated. The event concluded with a students’ presentation on the topic” Media and AI”. The event was attended by Prof. Mrinmoy Kumar Sarma, Dean, Academic Affairs and Prof. Farheena Danta, Dean, School of Humanities & Social Sciences apart from Tezpur University students and faculty members.

DHUBRI: Dhubri Press Club celebrated National Press Day with different notes as events packed celebration not only focused on rich religious, colonial history and heritage of Dhubri but also showcased its vibrant culture by staging song and dance by the artisans at Tetultola of Dhubri town on Thursday.

The event was attended by a galaxy of personalities including Dhubri Additional District Commissioner, Dhubri Superintendent of Police, Nabin Singh, an exponent in Bharatnatyam, Erika Ingrid Nandi and singer and a contestant of Sare Gama Pa, Victor Dey.

Speaking on the past glorious and rich history and heritage of Dhubri, renowned numismatist, Sankar Kumar Bose outlined various events of yesteryears of Dhubri from Mughal war to colonial past and events of freedom movement.

“Dhubri and this part of western Assam dotted with numerous places and found mention in the pages of history, but many more such historical events are still hidden and those need to be unearthed and uncovered to know its original and true history with solid evidences. I hope new generation will come up to this expectations and study more deeply about the historical places and facts of past,” Bose added.

Beside Bose, Additional District Commissioner, Nitya Binod Wari, Dhubri Superintendent of Police, Nabin Sing and Dhubri Joint Director of Health Services, Dr. J.B.Roy in their speech extended thier good wishes and greetings to all media persons on the National Press Day and hoped that the media persons would continue to play a positive and constructive role by highlighting facts and woes of the people with a responsibility.
