SILCHAR: The incident of a group of students mercilessly beating up three cooks in NIT Silchar had led to the suspension of three security guards who allegedly stood as mere spectators. On the other hand, the NIT authority had already formed a 15-member committee which will probe the incident and submit a report on August 4, on the basis of which steps would be taken against the erring students. In the meantime, a team of Cachar Police, including the Additional SP Kalyan Das and Silchar Sadar OC Amrit Kalita, visited the NIT complex for a preliminary investigation.

On Friday night, a group of students were seen in a video which went viral, beating three cooks of hostel 4. The students alleged that these cooks, Biki Ree, Mona Das and Rajkumar Dusad, had stolen their electronic gadgets, including mobile phone. Later, the angry students took the cooks to hostel 9 and beat them more mercilessly. Three security guards were seen standing idle when the students were beating the cooks. The authority has already suspended the guards identified as Ibung Yalma Singh, Rajkummar Nunia and Anil Nunia.

Meanwhile, police registered a case on the basis of the complaint lodged by Dusad, the cook, who was admitted in the hospital following serious injuries. Dr KL Baishnab, the Registrar of the premiere institute said, the students suspected that the cooks had stolen their gadgets but that did not allow them to take the law in their own hands. The students could have informed the authority. In spite of being mercilessly tortured, all the three cooks stood to their point that they had never stolen any items from the students’ hostel.
