Assam: Noted Singer Sudakshina Sarma Passes Away At The Age of 89

GUWAHATI: Renowned Assamese Singer Sudakshina Sarma, 89, passed away after battling a number of diseases. She passed away on July 3rd, a Monday. Her death was said to have occurred about 8.25 am, according to reports. Pressure sores, sepsis, and aspiration pneumonia were all issues Sudakshina Sarma was dealing with.

Sudakshina Sarma, also known as Nirupama Hazarika, was born in Guwahati in 1934. She was Jayanta Hazarika's older sister and the younger sister of 'Xudhakontho' Dr. Bhupen Hazarika. According to reports, her father-in-law after marriage had given her the name "Sudakshina" after her marriage to poet and composer Dileep Sarma.

Her most well-known songs include Xaratkalor Rati, Jetuka Bolere, and Kotha Aru Xur. Sudakshina Sarma underwent successful leg surgery at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) in October of last year after falling in her bathroom and incurring serious injuries. Following the surgical operation, physicians had reported that her condition was stable.

The doctors first said Sudakshina would heal without surgery, but eventually opted to carry it out.

The famous singer is kept under observation at the ICU for two days after the successful surgery.

In May 2023, the son of Sudakshina Sarma and a veteran singer from Assam, Rishiraj Sarma, passed away while receiving treatment at the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH). Sarma just received a kidney transplant in Kolkata, but his health quickly deteriorated, resulting in his tragic death.

Sarma was a successful musician, but he also had a law degree and legal experience. He was well-liked in both the legal and musical communities, and his loss has created a vacuum in both. Sarma made significant contributions to both the legal and musical worlds.
