GUWAHATI: In a recent development, the Oil India Limited (OIL) commissioned India's first 99.999 percent pure green hydrogen plant in the northeastern state of Assam.

On Wednesday 20 April, the 2nd largest national production and exploration firm commissioned the green hydrogen plant at its Jorhat Pump Station in its first major initiative for a green hydrogen economy in India.

OIL Chairman and Managing Director, Sushil Chandra Mishra informed that the green hydrogen pilot plant established in the Jorhat district of Assam has an installed capacity of producing 10 kg of hydrogen each day.

Mishra also said that the company expects the production of green hydrogen from the plant increases from 10 kilograms to 30 kilograms each day in the upcoming days.

The exploration and Production Company's Chairman further stated that apart from the country's first pure green hydrogen plant it is also India's first plant to use AEM (anion exchange membrane).

For the unversed, green hydrogen is produced from electricity generated by a 500-kilowatt solar plant through a 100-kilowatt anion exchange membrane array.

Notably, this green hydrogen plant in central Assam's Jorhat was commissioned by OIL within the time period of three months.

It may be mentioned that green hydrogen that can replace fossil fuels is actually the name for hydrogen gas which is produced through renewable energy like wind and solar power that do not require greenhouse gas emissions.

OIL has also started a thorough research study with IIT (Indian Institute of Technology) Guwahati over blending green hydrogen with natural gas for commercial applications of the blended fuel.

According to the officials of OIL, hydrogen gas that does not emit carbon dioxide on burning can be used as fuel in power generation, transportation sectors and also in several industrial purposes.

OIL MD while speaking about the success, states that through this the company has taken a very significant move towards the fulfillment of PM Modi's vision for Energy independent India.
