Assam: One Dimasa National Liberation Army cadre dead, 3 injured in police firing

One Dimasa National Liberation Army (DNLA) cadre died while three were injured when police resorted to firing at Maibang. The incident took place on Friday at Khashmaipur near Maibang.

HAFLONG: One Dimasa National Liberation Army (DNLA) cadre died while three were injured when police resorted to firing at Maibang. The incident took place on Friday at Khashmaipur near Maibang.

It is alleged that there was an altercation between police and DNLA, following which the police resorted to firing. The deceased cadre has been identified as Ali Dimasa alias Bibujit Haphila. The injured cadres are Tinjon Dimasa, Shot Dimasa and Rainbow Dimasa.

The DNLA cadres are under ceasefire and sheltered at a designated camp at Khashmaipur near Maibang.

Meanwhile, the Halali Progressive Welfare Society Haflong, an organization of the former Dima Halam Daogah DHD revolutionary organization, has condemned the firing and killing of a DNLA cadre and injury to three others. The HPWS Haflong has demanded proper enquiry and to book the guilty persons as per the law of the land.

Organizations like Jadikhe Naisho Hosom, All Dimasa Students’ Union, and Dimasa Students’ Union condemned the incident of firing at a time when peace is prevailing in the district to a great extent.

Dima Hasao Superintendent of Police Mayenk Kumar held a press meet in his office on Friday. Explaining the incident that took place at Khashmaipur near Maibang, SP Kumar said that shots were fired in the air to disperse the gathering, and not with any other intention. He, however, expressed his sorrow and termed the incident as unfortunate. He also informed the media persons that a magisterial enquiry into this firing had been instituted and compensation would be provided to the victim’s family.

Dima Hasao District Magistrate Simanta Kumar Das has ordered an enquiry. It is stated in the order that in pursuance of the report received from the Superintendent of Police, Dima Hasao vide his letter No HFG/Crime/7832 dated September 15, 2023, Meganjoy Thaosen, ACS I/ c S.D.O (C) Maibang, will conduct a magisterial enquiry into the incident that led to the death of Babujit Hapila alias Ali Dimasa (24), son of Briju Hapila, resident of Longmailai village under Haflong Police Station. The enquiry officer will ascertain the facts and circumstances that led to the incident resulting in the death of Babujit Hapila alias Ali Dimasa. The enquiry report is to be submitted within September 21.
