Assam: One More Employee of Paper Mill Dies, Toll Rises To 105

Both the Cachar Paper Mill in Panchgram of Hailakandi district and the Nagaon Paper Mill in Jagiroad, Morigaon had remained non-functional since October 2015 and March 2017 respectively.

Guwahati: Taking the toll to 105, another employee of Cachar Paper Mill, a unit of the new defunct Hindustan Paper Corporation Limited, died following the lack of treatment due to a financial crisis.

The deceased has been identified as Koliman Basumatary (57), a resident of Jagiroad in Morigaon district, who reportedly died due to cardiac arrest on Monday.

The union of Joint Action Committee of Recognized Unions (JACRU) said that Basumatary was suffering from major heart disease but was not able to afford his treatment due to a lack of sufficient financial resources that was caused to non-payment of his salary.

Both the Cachar Paper Mill in Panchgram of Hailakandi district and the Nagaon Paper Mill in Jagiroad, Morigaon had remained non-functional since October 2015 and March 2017 respectively.

Although, the Assam government had agreed for releasing a relief pack of rupees 375 crores for the rescue operation of the workers the JACRU said the relief pack has not been released yet.
