Guwahati: The joint opposition candidate for the upcoming presidential election, Yashwant Sinha, is likely to visit Assam from July 9-11, Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) Chief Bhupen Borah said on Monday.

''Our party workers will accompany him during his visit to the state as the Congress has already decided to vote for Yashwant Sinha,'' he added.

Meanwhile, the Assam Congress has also decided to invite Raijor Dal chief Akhil Gogoi and CPI-M leader Manoranjan Talukdar to join the campaign for Sinha.

Notably, apart from Raijor Dal and CPI-M, the Congress has not invited any other political party of the state.

Reportedly, the Badruddin Ajmal-led All Indian United Democratic Front (AIUDF) has hinted to support NDA's Presidential nominee Draupadi Murmu.

After leaving BJP in 2018 due to differences with the new leadership of the saffron party, Sinha joined the Trinamool Congress (TMC) last year. In the last few years, he has been a staunch opponent of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's regime.

Born in Patna, Bihar, Sinha came into politics after leaving his Indian Administrative Service (IAS) job which he joined in 1960 and spent 24 years.
