Guwahati: With the heavy spell of torrential rains that shook Assam starting to abate, the number of flood-affected persons in Assam has come down to 1,55,820; significantly lesser than 1,97,248 persons who were affected yesterday.
According to the Assam State Disaster Managament Authority's daily bulletin, a total of 219 villages across the 3 districts of Goalpara, Nagaon, and Hojai have been submerged by floods, and apart from humans, several thousand animals (17,750 large, 6,430 small, and 8,235 poultry) have been affected in this first spate of pre-monsoon floods in Assam.
The number of persons lodged in relief camps has come down to 6,122 as people started returning homewards due to the improving situation.
At the same time, an embankment has been damaged in Karimganj, and while 10 roads have been damaged in Barpeta, 4 roads have been impacted in Karimganj district of the Barak.
Unban floods have been reported from Cachar, where 1,000 people have been affected due to stagnant water due to incessant rainfall.
Thankfully, there were no fresh casualties reported on Tuesday, and the death toll in this spate of floods stood at 9. Meanwhile, 8 State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) boats were deployed, but no citizens needed rescuing.
Despite the receding floods, the state continued to feel the impact of the unceasing rains as 21 persons were killed by landslides. In the three Barak Valley districts of Cachar, Karimganj, and Hailakandi on Tuesday as at least 20 persons succumbed to death following a series of landslides triggered by incessant rains in the region. According to officials, six people in Karimganj district, and seven in Cachar and eight in Hailakandi were crushed to death in the morning today.
