GUWAHATI: According to sources, at the Pandu port in Guwahati, Assam, on January 13, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will essentially lay the foundation stones for two significant projects as part of a larger programme of work aimed at revitalising the area's inland waterways.

Sources claim that a ship repair facility is being built at the Pandu multi-modal terminal as part of these initiatives. This facility will be used to service ships owned by the Indian Waterways Transport, the Government of Assam, the Inland Waterways Authority of India, the Indian Army, and private operators operating on the NW-2 and NW-16, saving time and money in the process.

The construction of an elevated road linking the Pandu multi-modal terminal with National Highway 27 in Guwahati is the other initiative. This will allow for quick, seamless connectivity around the clock, making it a viable business option for cargo operators.

The Prime Minister will also officially open the Northeast Maritime Skill Centre, which will be crucial in developing the region's talent pool and equipping job seekers with highly sought-after skill sets for better employment prospects in the expanding logistics sector.

According to sources, Union Minister for Ports, Shipping, and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal made the following announcement about the initiatives: "Our ministry has undertaken significant efforts to energise the region's waterways in order to transform them into avenues for the economic progress, development, and growth of the region. This work has been made possible by the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. We are developing and implementing strategies to increase capacity in the area, whether it be for shipping goods or moving people by water. This will, in our opinion, provide a significant boost for the region's development."
