Guwahati: On the eve of Ulfa (I)'s protest day," the Assam Police said that the arrests of four people, including a linkman, over the previous week had cut off the financing of the illegal organisation.
The prescribed outfit, according to the police, is in desperate need of money to continue its operations, they stated on Sunday. SP (Charaideo) Yuvraj stated to the media, "We have stopped Ulfa's finance network (1).
This was the aim when the arrests were made." Yuvraj added that in addition to the linkman, the three other people detained this week were well-known businessmen who were reportedly giving Ulfa financial support (1).
It was previously reported that the Proscribe rebel organisation ULFA (I) planned to engage in subversive actions in upper Assam on November 28 to commemorate the insurgent group's "protest day."
According to intelligence sources, an 11-member team of ULFA (I) militants has entered eastern Assam illegally through Changlang district from their hideaway in Myanmar in order to conduct deadly attacks in the state.
Sources also claimed that the ULFA (I) gang was aiming for the crucial ONGC and Oil India Limited (OIL) facilities in Upper Assam. An Assam police official stated, "We have information that the squad could target both the oil PSUs, which have operations in Assam.
According to a police officer, Sivasagar and Charaideo police have initiated extensive operations in the two districts to find the ULFA (I) unit.
The group ambushed an Army vehicle earlier on November 15 on the Digboi-Pengeri route in the Tinsukia district, setting off a huge gunfight between the militants and the Army forces.
According to the police, the ambush occurred at 9.20 am as a column of Army vehicles carrying bulletproof armour passed through a road flanked on both sides by thick forests.
The attack, code-named "Operation Lakhipathar," was carried out to honour "Protest Day," which the militant group will observe on November 28, according to a statement from the group's self-styled Captain Rumel Asom.
