Assam Police Busts Fake Voter-ID Racket, Nabs 3 in Barpeta

Three accused in a fake voter identity card manufacturing racket were held and equipment recovered by police in Barpeta.

BARPETA: A major breakthrough was achieved by police in Barpeta when a big racket involving fake voter identity cards was busted and three people involved in the scam were arrested.

The three accused arrested by the police were reported to have been involved in making the fake voter identity cards for people of doubtful antecedents, police sources said. One is said to be the prime accused and two others were also arrested along with him.

The prime accused in the case was identified as Farukh Khan. Police arrested him along with Abdul Ali and Sahidul.

A total of 262 fake voter-IDs were reportedly recovered from the possession of the apprehended prime accused Khan.

Based on information gathered from the arrested criminals, raids were conducted at three separate locations across Barpeta under the leadership of Barpeta Sadar Police Station officer-in- charge.

Police officials also revealed that they have seized electronic equipment including a desktop, a laptop and a printer used in printing the fake voter-IDs.

Miscreants reportedly had an organization named D Voters Nagarik Mancha. Police is said to have conducted the operation based on a complaint lodged by District Election Officer Mayurakshi Dutta.

Earlier, in the first week of September, Assam Police busted a fake currency racket, arrested four persons in two separate operations in Nagaon and Hojai districts and also recovered equipment used in making the fake currency.

A police team of Kachua police station in Nagaon district, upon receipt of a secret tip-off, launched an operation in a house in the Kachua area of the district.

During the operation, police seized one Fake Indian Currency Note (FICN)-printing machine, 103 numbers of fake notes with Rs 500 denomination, 6 numbers of Rs 500 notes, one bundle of A4 size paper, one motorcycle, and three mobile phone handsets from the premises.

Police also managed to arrest three persons identified as 35 year- old Jalal Uddin, hailing from Hatikhuti, Kachua; 42 year- old R. Vanlalruati and 40 year- old Zoramchhani, both belonging to Ramhlum, Vengthar II, Aizawl of Mizoram.
