GUWAHATI: On February 25, 104 sacks of Burmese supari were found in Bilaipur village in Assam's Hailkandi district, according to a police official.

In a search of the warehouse of one Nizam Uddin Laskar of Lalpani in Bilaipur, the police confiscated the sacks containing Burmese supari.

According to the police source, Uddin has a lengthy history of smuggling Burmese supari out of his godown and into various areas of the Hailakandi district.

But since the cops took the sacks of Burma supari from his godown, Uddin has been on the escaping and hiding away from the situation.

Hailakandi Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Bidyut Das informed that, the confiscated supari would have a market value of about Rs 20 lakh.

On the basis of specific information, the officer-in-charge of the Bilaipur Police Station carried out a raid and took 104 sacks of Burmese supari from Nizam Uddin's warehouse. Investigation revealed that those sacks weren't his and that they had been left there by someone else.

The police official continued, "We have taken action in this regard by filing a complaint and seizing the Burmese supari. But no one has been detained in this matter, and we're still hunting for the individual who kept the Burmese supari at Nizam Uddin's warehouse."

The Assam Jatiyabadi Yuva Parishad's central secretary, Kabir Uddin, has claimed that the police are conducting daily raids in different parts of the district and confiscating Burmese supari along with their carriers, such as lorries or tempos.

Kabir urged the police to launch a thorough inquiry into the syndicate's leader and take decisive action against anyone who is connected to it.
