Guwahati: The team of Assam Police tasked with arresting West Bengal's Garga Chatterjee, the Chief Adviser of Bangla Pokkho, has returned empty-handed after failing to secure its catch.

The Assam Police team led by DCP (Crime) Barun Purkayastha had gone to Kolkata on June 19 to arrest the 'Bengali-nationalist', who had stirred up controversy when he equated Chaolung Sukaphaa, the founder of the Ahom dynasty in Assam, of being a Chinese invader. However, they were unsuccessful and returned to Assam earlier in the evening today.

"Our team had gone to Kolkata with every intention of arresting the culprit under the directions of the CM. We had an arrest warrant that had been procured at the CJM Court and we were all geared up to bring him back. However, we had to approach the Kolkata Police as the city is under their jurisdiction. When we produced the warrant, the police said that the address that had been mentioned did not exist. That is their version, but we can say that they did not cooperate in the manner that we expected, and therefore, we have been unsuccessful in nabbing Chatterjee", Munna Prasad Gupta, Guwahati Police Commissioner told The Sentinel Digital.

In a series of tweets that he let loose on social media after the death of 20 Indian army personnel at the hands of Chinese troops, Chatterjee had lacerated Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal for celebrating the Ahom king's birthday each year.

Amid a rising clamour for the Bengali intellectual's arrest, several FIRs were filed across Assam. Taking cognizance of the matter, the Assam Cheif Minister directed the Police force to bring Chatterjee to book. Although the police went to Kolkata, it ran into unexpected hurdles and the arrest of the author of the controversial tweets failed to materialize.
