GUWAHATI: Subhalakshmi Dutta, the suspended Additional Superintendent of Police (Border) in Assam's Charaideo district, surrendered herself to authorities in Sivasagar. This surrender came in the wake of grave allegations of assault and torture leveled against her by a domestic helper who had worked at Dutta's residence in Nazira.
The domestic help, who had been living a nightmare, accused Dutta of attempting to murder her and subjecting her to brutal torture. Among the horrifying details, it was revealed that hot water had been poured on her body, and she had been confined to a bathroom against her will. Disturbingly, the victim claimed that this abuse had been ongoing since 2019, painting a grim picture of sustained suffering.
Even more harrowing were the allegations that the police officer had used pepper spray on the victim's entire body, including her genitals. The victim initially sought help by filing a complaint at the Nazira Model Police Station on August 26. However, she was met with a cold shoulder, as the police initially refused to register an FIR into the incident.
The tide began to turn only when public outrage escalated. Following mounting pressure and public outcry, a case (No. 36/2023) was eventually registered against the police officer under sections 324/342 at the Nazira Adarsh Police Station.
In response to these shocking revelations, members of the All Assam Tea Student Association (AATSA) have demanded a thorough investigation into the allegations against ASP Dutta. They are also calling for strict action to be taken against her.
The AATSA activists have taken to the streets, staging protests in Nazira on both Monday and Tuesday. Their demands for justice are resounding, and they have issued a stern warning that roadblocks may be initiated if swift and appropriate action is not taken against the accused police officer.
This distressing case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of ensuring justice and accountability within the law enforcement system. The surrender of the suspended police officer signals a pivotal moment in this ongoing investigation, as the public watches closely for the outcomes of the legal proceedings that will follow.
