Assam Police Personnel Caught in Bribery Cases; Vigilance Directorate Takes Swift Action

GUWAHATI: In a recent development, three members of the Assam Police have been apprehended in separate incidents involving bribery, as reported on Friday. The Directorate of Vigilance & Anti-Corruption, Assam, displayed its swift response by capturing the Sub-Inspector (SI) along with two Constables from Laharighat Police Station in Morigaon district. The accused have been identified as SI Mukundra Upadhay, and Constables Mizanul Haque and Hirak Jyoti Deka.

According to the details provided, SI Mukundra Upadhyay was allegedly involved in soliciting a bribe of Rs 1 Lakh from an individual to settle a case. Shockingly, he was caught red-handed, accepting Rs 20,000 of the demanded sum. The involvement of Constables Mizanul Haque and Hirak Jyoti Deka in the conspiracy was also established, leading to their subsequent apprehension.

Taking to the digital realm, the Directorate of Vigilance & Anti-Corruption tweeted, “Today @DIR_VAC_ASSAM trapped red-handed ABC Mizanul Haque of Lahorighat PS for accepting Rs.20000/- as bribe in conspiracy with SI(UB) Mukundra Upadhyay for granting bail in a case.”

Another case involving corruption unfolded when Abadat Ali Ahmed, a UDA at Borjan High School, Abhayapuri, Bongaigaon District, was ensnared while accepting a bribe of Rs 1,600. The vigilant team from the Directorate of Vigilance & Anti-Corruption acted swiftly on August 9th, apprehending Ahmed red-handed during a trap operation. Ahmed had initially demanded Rs. 1,700 to facilitate the transfer of a NPS account and the processing of salary withdrawal for a teacher, but later lowered the bribe amount to Rs. 1,600.

Refusing to succumb to the unethical demands, the complainant sought the intervention of the Directorate of Vigilance & Anti-Corruption. Prompt action was taken, and a well-executed trap led to Ahmed's arrest at Maa Kali Hotel, Abhayapuri town. The tainted money was seized, and Ahmed was taken into custody with substantial evidence of his wrongdoing.

In response to this incident, a case was registered at the ACB Police Station on August 9, 2023, under Section 7(a) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988. These cases underscore the unwavering commitment of the Directorate of Vigilance & Anti-Corruption, Assam, to upholding integrity and justice, reinforcing its proactive approach to combat corruption and safeguard the interests of the public.
