SILCHAR: Much to the relief of the residents of the town, police in the wee hours carried a massive operation and picked up 17 thieves from various parts of Silchar. For the last couple of months, incidents of daredevil burglaries were reported in almost all parts of the town. Even the face and profile of a thief was captured in a CCTV camera and widely circulated in the social media. However, no single arrest was made leading loss of confidence in the police force. In this backdrop, Silchar police swung into action and in a single operation, nabbed 17 thieves. Five special teams were formed for the operation. One DSP rank officer led three teams while the rest two were led by OCs of Silchar Sadar and Rangirkhari Police Station. Burglares were mainly picked up from areas like Rangirkhari, Malugram, Ghoongoor.

SP Nomal Mahatta said, they could trace a distinct pattern in all the cases of the burglaries that led them to be confirmed that persons outside the town were involved in collusion with local miscreants. The main culprit, as named ‘Spiderman’ by the netizen was yet to be traced as it seemed that he was not a local resident. Mahatta said, all the 17 thieves apprehended were habitual offenders and interrogation would lead to further arrest. 12 mobile phones and a laptop stolen by them had been recovered.
