Assam Police Recover Big Cache of Arms, Ammunition in Udalguri

The cache of weapons and ammunition was recovered from within a forest at Sikaridanga in Udalguri district of Assam.

GUWAHATI: A big cache of arms and ammunition has been recovered by the police in Udalguri district of Assam.

An operation conducted by the police in the wee hours of Wednesday (May 3) led to the recovery of the arms and ammunition.

The cache of weapons and ammunition was recovered from within a forest at Sikaridanga in Udalguri district of Assam.

Assam director general of police (DGP) GP Singh confirmed the recovery of the arms and ammunition in a tweet.

Taking to Twitter, DGP GP Singh posted, “Huge cache of weapons recovered by @udalguripolice We remain committed to free Assam of all unlawful weapons.” A number of photographs were included in the post.

Reports, however, did not reveal the number of persons arrested in connection with the recovery of the weapons.

Earlier, ahead of Independence Day celebrations in 2020, Guwahati Police and Udalguri police based on specific intelligence inputs recovered a huge cache of arms and ammunitions from Udalguri late on the night of August 13.

The sophisticated arms, explosives and ammunition were wrapped in plastic and were buried in the ground.

The recovered items include two AK-47 rifles, five AK-56 rifles, two M-16 rifles, one airgun, seven 9 mm pistol along with several rounds of bullets, seven grenades, 200 detonator caps, 20 kilograms of explosives among other.

Guwahati Police Commissioner Munna Prashad Gupta, who is also the ADGP of the Special Branch of Assam Police, led the entire operation.

In recent years, Udalguri police have recovered several such consignments of arms and ammunition from several locations of the district.

Ahead of the BTC polls in 2020, Udalguri Police recovered a cache of arms and ammunition from a dense jungle of Deosani village along river Pagla in Mazbat area of the district.

Acting on specific intelligence inputs, the Udalguri Police carried out an operation in the jungle of Deuchani village at about 2 am on Tuesday and recovered the cache of arms and ammunition.

The recovered items, found buried in the ground, include 3 AK-56 rifles, 3 empty magazines and 20 rounds of live ammunition.
