LAKHIMPUR: Sensation prevailed in the Lakhimpur district following the recovery of 9 air guns in the river Subansiri. These air guns were recovered at Khabaloo Ghat under the Panigaon Police Station of the district during the last two days.

On Saturday, local fishermen reported the matter to the Panigaon police after noticing the arms on the edge of the river Subansiri. Then a team of the Panigaon olice arrived at the spot and recovered the arms. The police identified eight of them as air guns and the other as an air pistol. Police seized the recovered arms.

In this connection, while contacted, Officer in-Charge of the Panigaon Police Station, Polash Das said that the recovered arms might have been used by some people to kill birds.

"In the past, we asked the people of the area not to keep such things with them as it is legal offence. We told them to deposit such weapons. Thereafter, the owners might have dumped the arms into the river instead of depositing them with the police," the officer in-Charge said. He added that the recovered weapons had become too old for use.

On the other hand, the local people suspect that the arms might have been swept away by the river Subansiri from Arunachal Pradesh.
