Dibrugarh: The Assam Police has warned Oil India Limited (OIL) and ONGC of a possible attack on its vital installations and kidnapping of officials in upper Assam by insurgents groups.

Both the public sector oil companies have taken the safety advisory seriously and held meetings with officials of various agencies like CISF and AISF and briefed their employees on 'what to do'.

''We have received an intelligence input from Assam Police warning us about the possibility of insurgent groups targeting vital installations and kidnapping officials in upper Assam,'' OIL spokesperson Tridiv Hazarika was quoted as saying by TOI.

''An internal security review meeting was held on Tuesday and several decisions were taken considering the security alert,'' he added.

Hazarika further said that in the meeting it was decided to sensitize the employees and officers on various security-related issues and accordingly some steps have been taken.

On April 21 last year, three employees of the OIL and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) were kidnapped by ULFA (I) militants from the Lakwa oilfield in Sivasagar district along the Assam-Nagaland border.

Both were rescued on April 24 after an encounter near the India-Myanmar border in the Mon district of Nagaland, while the third was released by ULFA (I) militants after 31 days on May 22.
