GUWAHATI: Several prisoners on hunger strike has been taken out of the custody under medical grounds. Nine convicts were admitted in a nearby local hospital as their condition detoriated following a hunger strike since Tuesday morning.
The incident has been registered in Assam's Karimganj district. As per the medical authorities, the prisoners are suffering from dehydration due to absence of water and food for a longer stretch of time.
Lipi Deb Singh, superintendent of Karimganj civil hospital informed about their stable health condition and later discharged them from the hospital. More than hundred prisoners locked in the Karimganj jail undertook a hunger strike on 10th of January, Tuesday, demanding bail.
The convicts are all registered under narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances act. According to the inmates, around 224 individuals who got arrested and are currently inside the cell under the charge of NDPS, have been trying to get bail for years.
However, their appeal got rejected by the court several times. Recently, the convicts decided to forward a letter to the chief justice of Guwahati High Court, urging for bail.
They claimed lack of a fair chance to present their side of the story before the court. Therefore, they are demanding for bail. Furthermore, the prisoners mentioned ill treatment received by the jail personnels.
500 people are allotted in a room which is constructed for 170 people, added the inmates. Nevertheless, the inspector general of prisons in Assam, Barnali Sharma denied all the allegations put forward by them.
She further informed that the number of criminals under the NDPS act is growing, which calls for more accommodation for prisoners in the jails. Barnali Sharma through a video conference made the prisoners understand about the NDPS act which is non bailable.
The hunger strike they are on is getting wasted if the court doesn't hear their plea. Only with the help refined lawyers, the accused can get bail, she added.
Rintu Bodo, the additional deputy commissioner of Assam's Karimganj district, stated that, the authorities are in an attempt to convince the prisoners to give up on the strike inside the cell. A medical team was called for observation if protesters are suffering through any sort of medical issue.
